A Van de Graaff generator is a machine designed to build up a large static electric charge. While a person is in contact with the generator they also build up a charge, which can cause their hair to stand on end. They work best on a dry day, because less of the charge leaks away through dry air.

When using a Van de Graaff generator, just be aware that if you take your hand off it you'll get a big jolt.
